Callel
History
Born on opposite sides of the world and brought together by a familiar love of melody, Callel are four Edinburgh based laddies who have left the critics spellbound and their fanbase of millions enraptured.
Fronted by the duo of Craig Hughes and Arron Cornall, the quartet is completed by Sandy Butler on bass and Phil Hague on drums and percussion. They all like to sing in harmony. They are also frequently joined live by cello and violin for the more brooding moments.
Callel’s music is being spread to the masses through regular airplay from Radio 1 (Vic Galloway and Huw Stephens), BBC 6 Music (Tom Robinson), Forth One and XFM Scotland. Support slots with the likes of Paolo Nutini, US stars Rooney, Asobi Seksu and The Bluetones have also helped gain many more fans. So much so that for their latest sold-out performance at Cabaret Voltaire, Forth One radio offered the last remaining tickets for the show through a competition.
They have gained a large and loyal fanbase through playing in such esteemed venues as the Liquid Room, QMU, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Queen’s Hall, Caird Hall, Princes Street Gardens Main Stage and also various student unions up and down the country including St Andrews University where they have been asked back four times.
In September 2007 they were crowned ‘Best Band’ at the Ultimate Chill Festival held in Dundee’s magnificent Caird Hall.
In November 2007 they were chosen by the NME to support Rooney at their sold-out Edinburgh gig.
In January 2008 they featured in Radio 1 DJ Vic Galloway’s “bands to watch in 2008” shortlist. The next month they were featured as BBC Radio Scotland’s Unsigned Heroes.
In March 2008 they performed their first live BBC session on Vic’s show and had a blast.
Later this year they will be travelling to China to perform their own musical soundtrack to a performance of Lady White Snake in Hangzhou.
The band plan to continue up the musical ladder until they can be sustained solely from the income of their popular Callel-branded coasters and bottle-openers.
